More than thirty archaeological sites in Alexander County are recorded in the Historic Preservation Office's statewide inventory.
Alexander County was included in a four-county regional reconnaissance survey of historic places in 1986. This survey was a cooperative local-state project accomplished with grants and staff assistace from the Historic Preservation Office.
Alexander County has received a total of $15,000 in state appropriations for renovation of the Lucas Mansion (Hiddenite Center). Federal funds of $3,500 assisted with a reconnaissance county survey.
NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES
The Lucas Mansion in Hiddenite was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.
The Historic Preservation Office has provided technical assistance in the renovation of the Lucas Mansion into the Hiddenite Center. On-site consultation services have been provided for the rehabilitation of the former Alexander County Jail in Taylorsville.
