Seventy-four historic and prehistoric archaeological sites in Alleghany County are recorded in the North Carolina State Historic Preservation Office's statewide inventory.
In 1981-82 an architectural survey of the county was conducted. This survey was a cooperative local-state project accomplished with grants and staff assistance from the Historic Preservation Office.
In 1980 Alleghany County received a $5,200 federal subgrant from the Historic Preservation Office for a survey of the county's architectural and historical resources.
NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES
There are nine National Register listings in Alleghany County, including two archaeological sites.
One residence is currently undergoing renovation to utilize the new state tax credit for non-income-producing historic structures. The Historic Preservation Office reviews and provides restoration technical services for all preservation tax credit projects.
PUBLIC EDUCATION AND PUBLICATIONS
The Historic Preservation Office assisted Alleghany County in publishing the findings of the architectural survey in Alleghany Architecture: A Pictorial Survey in 1983.
The Historic Preservation Office has provided technical restoration assistance to the Alleghany County Courthouse and several of the historic buildings at Stone Mountain State Park, including the Hutchinson Homestead which has been restored to its late 19th century appearance. Staff has provided detailed recommendations for the rehabilitation of buildings in downtown Sparta as part of a study of community resources co-sponsored by Handmade in America.
