Over 250 archaeological sites are recorded in the North Carolina State Historic Preservation Office's statewide inventory.
In 1979 Clay County participated in a reconnaissance survey of the ten westernmost counties in the state, co-sponsored by Western North Carolina Associated Communities and the State Historic Preservation Office.
NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES
One archaeological site (Spikebuck Town Mound and Village) and two structures (the Clay County Courthouse and the John Covington Moore House) are listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
PRESERVATION PLANNING
The Historic Preservation Office provided archaeological assistance to the Tennessee Valley Authority's Chatuge Dam Weir project in 1993.
PUBLIC EDUCATION
The Historic Preservation Office assisted the Clay County Historical Society with the design and installation of a permanent exhibit in the Old Jail Museum.
Technical restoration assistance has been provided to the Clay County Courthouse and Old Clay County Jail projects.
