One of many investigations of abandoned historic cemeteries by the North Carolina State Historic Preservation Office involved documentation and assistance with the Chavis family cemetery near Creedmoor in 1990. Over 270 prehistoric and historic archaeological sites are recorded in the Historic Preservation Office's statewide inventory for Granville County.
A county-wide architectural survey was undertaken in 1983-1985 with state and federal grant funds administered by the Historic Preservation Office. This was a cooperative local-state project accomplished with funding and staff assistance from the Historic Preservation Office.
In 1985 to 1987, Granville County received $40,712 in federal subgrants from the Historic Preservation Office for the county architectural survey and preparation of more than thirty National Register nominations. State appropriations of $354,900 have assisted the county survey as well as restoration of the Central Children's Home, the Granville County Courthouse, the Dr. George C. Shaw House, and the Granville County Museum, and supported the Camp Butner Historic Cemetery project.
NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES
Following the comprehensive architectural survey of the county in 1983-1985, with the assistance of state and federal grants a number of properties were listed in the National Register. Farmsteads and plantation seats dominate the forty-three National Register listings for Granville County. National Register listings in Oxford include a historic district, individual residences, the County Courthouse, and the Central Orphanage.
Restoration of Red Hill Plantation, an income-producing tax credit project near Bullock, has been completed at a construction investment of $296,000. One residence is currently undergoing renovation to utilize the new state tax credit for non-income-producing structures. The Historic Preservation Office reviews and provides restoration technical services for all tax credit projects.
PUBLIC EDUCATION AND PUBLICATIONS
The Historic Preservation Office assisted the Granville Historical Society, Inc. in publishing the results of the architectural survey in Heritage and Homesteads: The History and Architecture of Granville County, North Carolina, by Marvin Brown and Andrew J. Carlson, in 1988.
Technical restoration services provided by the Historic Preservation Office have assisted the restoration of Red Hill Plantation and planning for reuse of the Lewis Wimbush House and the Orpheum Theater. State grant assisted projects using these technical services were the Granville County Courthouse and the Central Orphanage, both in Oxford. Staff also participated in the 1998 Oxford Main Street design charette.
