The North Carolina State Historic Preservation Office statewide inventory contains information on over 500 prehistoric and historic archaeological sites in Haywood County.
An architectural survey of Canton was completed in 1981 and published in 1985 with guidance from the Historic Preservation Office. The county architectural survey was completed in 1983 with grant and technical assistance from the Historic Preservation Office and published privately in 1993. In 1995, Waynesville undertook a comprehensive survey with grant and staff assistance from the Historic Preservation Office.
Federal grants amounting to $15,600 have assisted architectural surveys in Haywood County and the cities of Waynesville and Canton. A $30,000 state grant assisted restoration of the Canton Armory.
NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES
Fourteen individual listings include some of the county's most distinctive farm houses and commercial and public buildings, including the Haywood County Courthouse, the Lambeth Inn at Lake Junaluska, Mount Zion Church, and the Clyde Ray, Sr. House in Waynesville.
LOCAL PRESERVATION COMMISSIONS
Established in 1995, the Waynesville Historic Preservation Commission has received technical assistance from the Historic Preservation Office, which has commented on reports for the local designation of one district and six landmarks.
The Clyde Ray Sr. House, an income-producing tax credit project in Waynesville, has been completed with a construction investment of $150,000; the Davis-Forbes House near Clyde has also completed renovations. The Historic Preservation Office reviews and provides restoration technical services for all preservation tax credit projects.
PUBLIC EDUCATION AND PUBLICATIONS
The Historic Preservation Office assisted the Canton Historical Commission in publishing the findings of an architectural survey entitled Canton: The Architecture of Our Home Town in 1985, and in the private publication of Haywood Homes and History in 1993. In 1994, the Historic Preservation Office participated in a "Back to the Basics" workshop in Waynesville for area historical organizations.
The Historic Preservation Office has provided technical restoration assistance to the Doc Rogers Farm, the Citizens Bank Building, the Waynesville Hardware Building, the Shelton House, and other buildings in Waynesville in cooperation with the Downtown Waynesville Association, and to the Canton Armory and Colonial Theater in Canton.
