The North Carolina State Historic Preservation Office statewide inventory contains information on over 300 prehistoric and historic archaeological sites in Iredell County.
County and municipal architectural surveys and National Register nomination projects were conducted between 1977 and 1980. In 1999, a survey update of Statesville's historic districts was completed with assistance from a state grant. Surveys are cooperative local-state projects accomplished with grants and staff assistance from the Historic Preservation Office.
State grants of $191,500 have assisted restorations of the Ebenezer Academy, the Iredell County Courthouse, the Mooresville Depot, Statesville City Hall, the Old Jail, and Statesville High School, and funded survey and National Register work in Statesville. Federal grants of $59,350 assisted restorations of Mitchell College and Statesville City Hall, and supported surveys and National Register nominations in the county and in Statesville.
NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES
Forty-five National Register listings include seven historic districts in Mooresville and Statesville and thirty-eight individual listings across the county, including many farm houses and churches.
LOCAL PRESERVATION COMMISSIONS
Iredell County has established a historic properties commission, and Statesville has established a local historic district commission. Statesville is a Certified Local Government. The Historic Preservation Office has reviewed local designation reports for four districts in Statesville and twelve individual landmarks in the county.
Eleven income-producing tax credit projects have been completed in Iredell County at a total construction investment of $3,530,756, including Knox Realty in Mooresville and the Lazenby Hardware Store in Statesville; two additional tax credit projects are currently undergoing renovation, including the Carolina Motor Company in Statesville. One residential renovation has been completed to utilize the new state tax credit for non-income-producing structures, and four residences are being rehabilitated under the program. The Historic Preservation Office reviews and provides technical restoration services for all preservation tax credit projects.
PUBLIC EDUCATION AND PUBLICATIONS
The Historic Preservation Office assisted Iredell County, the City of Statesville, and the Town of Mooresville in publishing the findings of the architectural survey in An Inventory of Historic Architecture: Iredell County, North Carolina in 1978. The Historic Preservation Office participated in a "Back to Basics Workshop" in Statesville during 1994, for area historical organizations. In 1995, the Statesville Historic Preservation Commission hosted the annual statewide preservation commission conference co-sponsored by the Historic Preservation Office.
The Historic Preservation Office has provided technical restoration assistance for the restoration and renovation of the Statesville City Hall, the Iredell County Courthouse, the Lowenstein House, and the Main Building at Mitchell College. Other projects receiving these services include Statesville and Mooresville downtown tax credit projects, Ebenezer Academy, and Allison Woods.
