ARCHAEOLOGY

The North Carolina State Historic Preservation Office statewide inventory contains information on approximately seventy-five prehistoric and historic archaeological sites in Mitchell County.

ARCHITECTURAL SURVEY

Mitchell County was part of a three-county reconnaissance survey in 1985. Surveys are cooperative local-state projects accomplished with grants and staff assistance from the Historic Preservation Office.

GRANTS

State grants totaling $130,000 have been awarded for renovation of Native Stone Park, the Woody Motor Center, and the Old Poplar School.

NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES

Five individual properties are listed in the National Register, including the Mitchell County Courthouse in Bakersville.

PRESERVATION TAX CREDITS

The Historic Preservation Office reviewed and provided restoration technical services for Crystal Place, an income-producing tax credit project in Spruce Pine, which has been completed at a construction investment of $300,000.

RESTORATION

Technical restoration consultations by the Historic Preservation Office have included the Green-Sharpe House in Bakersville and properties in downtown Spruce Pine through the local Main Street program, including Crystal Place. In 1998, staff provided detailed recommendations for rehabilitations of buildings in Bakersville as part of an assessment of community resources sponsored by Handmade in America.
