ARCHAEOLOGY

The North Carolina State Historic Preservation Office statewide inventory contains information on 120 prehistoric and historic archaeological sites in Nash County.

ARCHITECTURAL SURVEY

The Historic Preservation Office provided financial and supervisory assistance to the comprehensive architectural survey of downtown Rocky Mount in 1978-1979, and to the comprehensive architectural survey of the rural portions of the county and other incorporated towns in 1983-1984.

GRANTS

Since 1975, Nash County has received $46,000 in federal subgrants from the Historic Preservation Office for restoration work at Stonewall and for the Rocky Mount architectural survey. State appropriations of $298,000 have assisted the Nash County/Rocky Mount surveys and restoration of Stonewall and the Nash County Cultural Center in Nashville.

NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES

Nash County's twenty-four National Register listings include houses, farms, industrial buildings, the county courthouse, Stonewall, grist mills, and districts in Nashville, Rocky Mount, and Spring Hope.

LOCAL PRESERVATION COMMISSIONS

In 1995, Historic Preservation Office staff began providing technical assistance to the city of Rocky Mount as it explored establishment of a local historic preservation commission. The commission was formally established in 1997.

PRESERVATION TAX CREDITS

Five income-producing tax credit projects have been completed in Nash County at a total construction investment of $1,849,000. The Historic Preservation Office reviews and provides restoration technical services for all preservation tax credit projects.

PUBLIC EDUCATION AND PUBLICATIONS

The Historic Preservation Office assisted Nash County in the publication of the results of the architectural surveys in Central City Historic Buildings Inventory, Rocky Mount, Nash County by Kate Mearns in 1979, and The History and Architecture of Nash County, North Carolinaby Richard Mattson in 1987. Assistance was also provided to the owners of the Rocky Mount Mills who hosted a design charette in 1996.

RESTORATION

Nash County has proven to be an active county for historic preservation work, and the Historic Preservation Office has provided technical assistance to many projects in the county, including the Nash County Cultural Center in Nashville, Stonewall, Bellemonte, the Imperial Tobacco Company, Fire Station #2, Rocky Mount Mills and associated mill houses, the Rocky Mount Railroad Station, the Bartholomew House, Webb's Mill, the Country Doctor Museum in Bailey; and many others.
