ARCHAEOLOGY

The North Carolina State Historic Preservation Office inventory contains information on over 800 prehistoric and historic archaeological sites in Onslow County, including forty-eight prehistoric sites and Snead's Ferry Shipwreck, a Confederate blockade running schooner that was burned during a Civil War raid.

ARCHITECTURAL SURVEY

A comprehensive survey of Onslow County was conducted with the assistance of the Historic Preservation Office in 1987-1988. Surveys are cooperative local-state projects accomplished with grants and staff assistance from the Historic Preservation Office.

GRANTS

Federal grants of $20,960 and state grants of $81,000 have provided seed money for land and underwater archaeology projects, as well as an architectural survey, National Register nominations, and a survey publication.

NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES

Onslow County has fifteen listings in the National Register. Ten were listed following the architectural survey of the county with funding and supervisory assistance of the Historic Preservation Office, including the Swansboro Historic District, Catherine Lake Historic District, Mill Avenue Historic District in Jacksonville, and the Richlands Historic District.

LOCAL PRESERVATION COMMISSIONS

The Historic Preservation Office staff provides technical assistance to the Swansboro Historic District Commission.

PRESERVATION PLANNING

The Historic Preservation Office has worked with the North Carolina Department of Transportation and the Town of Swansboro on the design of the new White Oak River Bridge that will complement the town's historic district and solve pedestrian problems. Staff aided the North Carolina Downtown Development Association on the production of a technical assistance team report to the City of Jacksonville in 1993.

PRESERVATION TAX CREDITS

The William Edward Mattocks House, an income-producing tax credit project in Swansboro, is currently undergoing renovation. One residential renovation is underway to utilize the new state tax credit for non-income-producing historic structures. The Historic Preservation Office reviews and provides restoration technical services for all preservation tax credit projects.

PUBLIC EDUCATION AND PUBLICATIONS

With the assistance of a 1995 state grant and technical guidance by the Historic Preservation Office, the results of the 1987-1988 architectural survey were published in 1998 as The Architectural History of Onslow County, North Carolina.

RESTORATION

Technical restoration assistance has been provided to the Swansboro Town Hall, several buildings at Catherine Lake, the Onslow County Courthouse, the Jarmin Hotel, the Jacksonville Depot, Yopps Meeting House, and several buildings in Camp Lejeune, Richlands, Swansboro, and Jacksonville.
