ARCHAEOLOGY

The North Carolina State Historic Preservation Office statewide inventory contains information on about forty-five prehistoric and historic archaeological sites in Pamlico County. They include Gum Thicket Subdivision (six sites), Forest Shore Subdivision (Historic Cemetery), Otter Creek Shipwreck, Oriental area survey, Whortonsville Shipwreck, and Summer Winds.

ARCHITECTURAL SURVEY

A comprehensive survey of Pamlico County was conducted in 1978 and 1979. Surveys are cooperative local-state projects accomplished with grants and staff assistance from the Historic Preservation Office.

GRANTS

In 1978 and 1979, the Historic Preservation Office awarded federal preservation subgrants totaling $10,000 for the county's architectural survey and its publication. Since 1988, special state grants totaling $25,000 have assisted the restoration of the Oriental Movie Theater as a cultural and civic center and the restoration of the Bennett Cemetery.

NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES

Pamlico County has an individual listing in the National Register, China Grove near Oriental.

PUBLIC EDUCATION AND PUBLICATIONS

In 1979 the Historic Preservation Office assisted Pamlico County in publishing the findings of the architectural survey in Pamlico County Imagery, which catalogued the historic architecture of the county.

RESTORATION

The Historic Preservation Office has provided technical services in the renovation and restoration of an early cemetery, the Arapahoe School, and for various houses in Oriental, Bayboro, and Vandemere.
