The North Carolina State Historic Preservation Office inventory contains information on almost 100 prehistoric and historic archaeology sites in Pasquotank County. Activities have included a grant supported archaeological survey of the county in which numerous sites were identified and assessed. Twenty-three shipwrecks located in Pasquotank were recorded in 1984.
A comprehensive survey of the county and Elizabeth City resulted in a publication in 1989. Surveys are cooperative local-state projects accomplished with grants and staff assistance from the Historic Preservation Office.
Federal grants in the county have totaled $24,781 and state grants have totaled $79,000. Major projects were the architectural survey in Elizabeth City and Pasquotank County, National Register nominations for Elizabeth City, and restoration of the Elizabeth City Cemetery and the Pendleton House.
NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES
Twelve Pasquotank listings in the National Register include five districts in Elizabeth City. Preparations of Elizabeth City nominations were supported by a federal grant from the Historic Preservation Office.
LOCAL PRESERVATION COMMISSIONS
The Historic Preservation Office has reviewed and offered advisory comment on the local designation of the Elizabeth City Historic District. The city is a Certified Local Government.
Eight income-producing tax credit projects have been completed in Pasquotank County at a total construction investment of $3,177,900, including the Virginia Dare Hotel in Elizabeth City. One residential renovation is underway to utilize the new state tax credit for non-income-producing historic structures. The Historic Preservation Office reviews and provides restoration technical services for all preservation tax credit projects.
PUBLIC EDUCATION AND PUBLICATIONS
The Historic Preservation Office assisted the Museum of the Albemarle in publishing the findings of the architectural survey in On the Shores of the Pasquotank: The Architectural Heritage of Elizabeth City and Pasquotank County in 1989.
The Historic Preservation Office has provided technical restoration services to numerous properties including the Ward-Jackson-Jennings House, the Pendleton-Morris-Barclift House, the Hinton-Palin House, and numerous commercial properties in downtown Elizabeth City.
