ARCHAEOLOGY

The North Carolina State Historic Preservation Office statewide inventory contains information on over 130 prehistoric and historic archaeological sites in Perquimans County. Numerous sites in the county were the subject of an archaeological survey in 1988.

ARCHITECTURAL SURVEY

In 1978-1979 Perquimans County was covered by a comprehensive survey funded in part by a federal subgrant awarded by the Historic Preservation Office. Surveys are cooperative local-state projects accomplished with grants and staff assistance from the Historic Preservation Office.

GRANTS

A total of $54,852 in federal grants and $302,500 in state grants has been awarded for projects in the county. The major project receiving assistance has been the Newbold-White House where grants have funded archaeological studies and restoration of the 1730 house.

NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES

Sixteen National Register listings in Perquimans County include the county courthouse and the Church of the Holy Trinity in Hertford, the Hertford Historic District, the Belvidere Historic District, the Old Neck Historic District, the Newbold-White House, and several plantation houses.

PRESERVATION TAX CREDITS

Two income-producing tax credit projects in Perquimans County are currently undergoing renovation. One residential renovation has been completed to utilize the new state tax credit for non-income-producing historic structures, and two residences are currently being rehabilitated under the program. The Historic Preservation Office reviews and provides restoration technical services for all preservation tax credit projects.

PUBLIC EDUCATION AND PUBLICATIONS

The Historic Preservation Office assisted the town of Hertford in publishing The Historic Architecture of Perquimans County, North Carolina in 1982.

RESTORATION

The restoration of the Newbold-White House proceeded under the professional guidance and advice of the Historic Preservation Office. In addition, staff has provided restoration advice to Stockton, the Sutton-Newby House, Cove Grove, Land's End, the Fletcher-Skinner House, the Jaycocks House, and other projects.
