The North Carolina State Historic Preservation Office statewide inventory contains information on over 1,300 prehistoric and historic archaeological sites in Randolph County. Excavations have been carried out at the Thayer Farm Site, which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
A comprehensive survey of Randolph County was conducted in 1978-1979. Surveys are cooperative local-state projects accomplished with grants and staff assistance from the Historic Preservation Office.
A total of $55,000 in state appropriations have assisted the restoration of the Asheboro/Randolph Arts Guild Building, the Gatekeeper's House, the Franklinville Manufacturing Co. Building, and Cedar Falls Chapel, and supported an architectural survey in the town of Liberty. In 1978, a $7,000 federal subgrant was awarded by the Historic Preservation Office for the survey of Randolph County's historic architecture.
NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES
Ten individually listed National Register properties include the Deep River-Columbia Manufacturing Company in Ramseur, the Pisgah Covered Bridge, and three archaeological sites. There also are two districts listed in the National Register in Coleridge and Franklinville. A 1997 state grant is assisting preparation of a National Register nomination for the Liberty Historic District.
LOCAL PRESERVATION COMMISSIONS
In 1998, the Historic Preservation Office provided technical assistance to the town of Liberty in the establishment of a local preservation commission.
The Moses Hammond House, an income-producing tax credit project in Archdale, and the former Central School, an income-producing tax credit project in Asheboro, have been completed at a total construction investment of $1,803,600. The Historic Preservation Office reviews and provides restoration technical services for all preservation tax credit projects.
PUBLIC EDUCATION AND PUBLICATIONS
The Historic Preservation Office assisted Randolph County and the City of Asheboro in publishing the results of the architectural survey in Architectural History of Randolph County, North Carolina in 1985. Since 1996, the Historic Preservation Office has assisted Randolph Community College in its establishment of a historic preservation program.
The Historic Preservation Office has provided technical assistance for the restoration of the old St. Paul's Church (now St. Paul's Museum) in Randleman, the Makepeace House in Franklinville, the Randolph County Courthouse in Asheboro, the Wilson-Kindley House, and many other buildings throughout the county.
