ARCHAEOLOGY

The North Carolina State Historic Preservation Office statewide inventory contains information on over 460 prehistoric and historic archaeological sites in Robeson County. Special projects have included a county-wide archaeological survey, the North Carolina Indian Cultural Center survey, and Lumber River canoe recovery.

ARCHITECTURAL SURVEY

Surveys have been completed in Red Springs (1978), central Lumberton (1979), and Maxton (1979-80). Surveys are cooperative local-state projects accomplished with grants and staff assistance from the Historic Preservation Office.

GRANTS

Since 1978, Robeson County has received $63,218 in federal subgrants from the Historic Preservation Office for architectural surveys of Red Springs, Lumberton, and Maxton; archaeological studies; and restoration of the Carolina Theatre in Lumberton. State grants totaling $582,850 assisted projects for the Carolina Theater, the Humphrey-Williams-Smith Plantation, Flora MacDonald College, Olive Branch Masonic Lodge, and the Rowland Depot.

NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES

Twelve individual properties and two districts are listed in the National Register, including the Lumberton Commercial Historic District, the Maxton Historic District, Baker Sanitorium, the Humphrey-Williams Plantation, Flora McDonald College, and the former Pembroke High School.

PRESERVATION TAX CREDITS

The Historic Preservation Office is reviewing and providing restoration technical services for the Planters Building, an income-producing tax credit project in Lumberton, which is currently undergoing renovation.

PUBLIC EDUCATION AND PUBLICATIONS

The Historic Preservation Office assisted the Maxton Historical Society in publishing An Inventory of Historic Architecture of Maxton, North Carolina in 1982, and the City of Lumberton in publishing Architectural and Historical Survey of Central Lumberton in 1980.

RESTORATION

The Historic Preservation Office has provided technical assistance for the restoration of the Carolina Theatre in Lumberton, the Humphrey-Williams House near Lumberton, the Henry Berry Lowrie House near Pembroke, the Flora McDonald College building in Red Springs, the Olive Branch Lodge in Rowland, the Patterson Building in Maxton, and many other buildings throughout the county.
