The North Carolina State Historic Preservation Office statewide inventory contains information on 215 prehistoric and historic archaeological sites in Stokes County.
The Historic Preservation Office provided funding and supervisory assistance for the comprehensive architectural survey of the county conducted in 1988-1989.
Federal grants totaling $6,600 and state grants totaling $80,000 have been awarded to assist the John Martin Rock House, the Stokes County architectural survey, the Walnut Cove School, and the restoration of the Stack-Bickett Law Office as the Danbury Town Hall.
NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES
Eleven individual properties and the Danbury Historic District are listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
One residential renovation is underway to utilize the new state tax credit for non-income-producing historic structures. The Historic Preservation Office reviews and provides restoration technical services for all preservation tax credit projects.
PUBLIC EDUCATION
Staff of the Historic Preservation Office worked closely with the staff of the North Carolina Museum of History in developing the "Sauratown Woman" featured in the Women's History exhibit at the new museum. The exhibit is based on the findings of an archaeological study at the Sauratown site in Stokes County.
The Historic Preservation Office has provided technical restoration assistance to Stokes County historic properties including the Walnut Cove Colored School, the state grant-funded Rock House, the Stokes County Courthouse, and the McCanless Inn in Danbury.
