Excavations have been conducted as part of the restoration of the Edwards Franklin House. The Hardy archaeological site has received grant funds. The Historic Preservation Office statewide inventory contains information on 162 prehistoric and historic archaeological sites in Surry County.
The Historic Preservation Office provided funding and supervisory assistance for the comprehensive architectural survey of the county conducted in 1981.
Federal grants totaling $93,709 and state grants totaling $205,000 have been awarded to assist the countywide architectural survey, the Edwards-Franklin House, the William Alfred Moore House, and Rockford.
NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES
Eleven individual properties and two historic districts are listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Several of these listings are in Mount Airy.
LOCAL PRESERVATION COMMISSIONS
The Mount Airy Historic Preservation Commission has designated one historic district and one landmark.
Four income-producing credit projects have been completed in Surry County at a total construction investment of $508,400; two additional projects are currently under renovation. The Historic Preservation Office reviews and provides restoration technical services for all tax credit projects.
PUBLIC EDUCATION AND PUBLICATIONS
The Historic Preservation Office assisted the Surry County Historical Society in the 1987 publication of the findings of the architectural survey in Simple Treasures: The Architectural Legacy of Surry County, by Laura A.W. Phillips.
Restoration and rehabilitation projects receiving assistance from the Historic Preservation Office include the Edwards-Franklin House, Historic Rockford, the William Moore House in Mount Airy, the Mount Airy Regional History Museum, and the Elkin Main Street program.
