ARCHAEOLOGY

In 1990-1991 the North Carolina State Historic Preservation Office administered a grant project at the Allison-Deaver House to assist in restoration planning. In 1992-1993, the Historic Preservation Office assisted the Transylvania County Historic Properties Commission in administering an archaeological survey grant that resulted in the identification of nearly two hundred sites. This survey identified areas of planning concern and will be very useful for long-range planning purposes. The Historic Preservation Office statewide inventory contains information on over 750 prehistoric and historic archaeological sites in Transylvania County.

ARCHITECTURAL SURVEY

In 1990-1991 a comprehensive architectural survey of the county was conducted under the supervision of the Historic Preservation Office. This survey was a cooperative local-state project accomplished with a grant and staff assistance from the Historic Preservation Office.

Since 1990 preservation projects in Transylvania County have been awarded a total of $112,790 in federal matching grants. These funds have supported such projects as the restoration of the Transylvania County Courthouse, the restoration of the Allison-Deaver House, the 1990 county architectural survey, and the 1992 county archaeological survey. State legislative funds totaling $45,000 have supported restoration of the county courthouse, the Allison-Deaver House, and Silvermont.
