Excavation of the archaeological site of colonial leader Richard Henderson's home resulted in recovery of historical artifacts and information that would otherwise have been lost. The North Carolina State Historic Preservation Office statewide inventory contains information over 250 prehistoric and historic archaeological sites in Vance County.
A federal grant helped fund a downtown Henderson survey, the basis of subsequent economic investment for rehabilitation. This survey was a cooperative local-state project accomplished with a grant and staff assistance from the Historic Preservation Office.
A federal grant of $9,800 assisted the Henderson architectural survey. State grants of $209,950 have aided rehabilitation of such local historic properties as the Henderson Fire Station, Henderson Institute, and the Vance County Historical Museum.
NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES
Nineteen National Register listings include eighteen individual properties across the county and a large district in Henderson.
Eight income-producing tax credit projects have been completed in Vance County at a total construction investment of $2,522,000, including the former Maria Parham Hospital and the Seaboard Railroad Depot, both in Henderson; three additional projects, including Mistletoe Villa, are currently undergoing renovation. One residential renovation has been completed to utilize the new state tax credit for non-income-producing historic structures, and one residence is currently being rehabilitated under the program. The Historic Preservation Office reviews and provides restoration technical services for all preservation tax credit projects.
PUBLIC EDUCATION AND PUBLICATIONS
The Historic Preservation Office assisted the city of Henderson in the 1979 publication of An Inventory of Historic Architecture, Henderson, North Carolina.
The Historic Preservation Office has provided technical restoration assistance to a number of Vance County historic properties, including the bed and breakfast inns at LaGrange and Ashburn Hall and key downtown Henderson landmarks such as the former Maria Parham Hospital, the former First National Bank, and the Henderson Fire Station.
