ARCHAEOLOGY

The North Carolina State Historic Preservation Office provided technical assistance and $6,554 in grant funds for archaeological study at the Ward Site. Over 325 prehistoric and historic archaeological sites are recorded in Historic Preservation Office files for Watauga County.

ARCHITECTURAL SURVEY

In cooperation with the Appalachian Consortium, the Historic Preservation Office staff provided oversight, administration, and $9,500 in grant funds for a partial architectural survey of Watauga County in 1987-1988.

GRANTS

Federal grants of $11,554 (1980, 1988) and state grants of $67,500 (1984-1988) benefited projects including the Blowing Rock Arts Center, Dr. Walter Jones House, Ward Site archaeology, and Watauga County architectural survey.

NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES

Fifteen individual properties and one historic district, the Green Park Historic District in Blowing Rock, are listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

LOCAL PRESERVATION COMMISSIONS

Historic Preservation Office staff provided advisory comment on the designation report for Valle Crucis Historic District, locally designated under a general ordinance, not a zoning ordinance.

PRESERVATION TAX CREDITS

The Mast Farm Inn, an income-producing tax credit project in Valle Crucis, has been completed at a construction investment of $188,600. One residential renovation is underway to utilize the new state tax credit for non-income-producing historic structures. The Historic Preservation Office reviews and provides restoration technical services for all preservation tax credit projects.

RESTORATION

The Historic Preservation Office provided technical restoration assistance to the grant projects at the Blowing Rock Arts Center and the Jones House in Boone, and advised rehabilitation work at the former Cove Creek School and Mount Bethel Church.
