ARCHAEOLOGY

In 1982-1983, the North Carolina State Historic Preservation Office supervised an archaeological site survey of the county funded with a matching federal preservation subgrant. In 1988, the Historic Preservation Office assisted a team from Wake Forest University in the examination and documentation of the Hurt Ferry Flat. The Historic Preservation Office statewide inventory contains information on 208 prehistoric and historic archaeological sites in Yadkin County.

ARCHITECTURAL SURVEY

As a cooperative local-state project, a comprehensive architectural survey of the county was conducted in 1984-1985 under the supervision of the Historic Preservation Office with funding by a special state appropriation.

GRANTS

Federal grants totaling $78,625 and administered by the Historic Preservation Office have funded restoration of the Richmond Hill Law School and an archaeology site survey of the county. State appropriations totaling $232,500 funded an architectural survey of the county and contributed to the restoration of the Richmond Hill Law School.

NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES

Seven individual properties have been listed in the National Register since 1970, including the Richmond Hill Law School, Glenwood Plantation, the Second Yadkin County Jail, and the Donnaha Site, an archaeological site adjacent to the Yadkin River near East Bend.

PRESERVATION TAX CREDITS

One residential renovation is underway to utilize the new state tax credit for non-income-producing historic structures. The Historic Preservation Office reviews and provides restoration technical services for all preservation tax credit projects.

PUBLIC EDUCATION AND PUBLICATIONS

The Yadkin County Historical Society published Historical Architecture of Yadkin County in 1987, based on the county architectural survey assisted by the Historic Preservation Office.

RESTORATION

The Historic Preservation Office provided technical restoration assistance for the restoration of Richmond Hill Law School which received a series of state and federal grants from 1971 to 1988. Staff also provided consultation services for the restoration of the George D. Holcomb House near Yadkinville.
